Split Ammonites from Madagascar

Description: Spectacular ammonites from Madagascar which have been sagitally split and polished to show wonderful detail within. Most of the individual chambers are filled with Calcite crystals of various colors, with the septa (divisions) between each chamber preserved as contrasting Calcite, making for a superb display piece. Some examples are not completely infilled, giving a fine “geode-like” appearance. The Ammonidea have a rich evolutionary history which began in the Upper Silurian. The order began an extensive radiation in the Triassic and Jurassic, became most diverse during the Cretaceous, only to become extinct during the late Cretaceous extinction event which also saw the demise of the non-avian dinosaurs. Fossil ammonoids that were quite cosmopolitan in distribution serve as valuable index fossils used to date deposits around the world.
